For Biotechnology research to benefit
For Biotechnology research to benefit Africa, there has to be centers of excellence, where scientists from across the continent will jointly conduct research that’s beneficial to the African situation.
The proposal?s critics are reading mischief where there is none. They are construing regionalization to mean zoning. I would not be surprised that these are the same people who have messed up the drive to assimilate genetically modified crops into Africa’s agriculture.
Cross-border partnership in biotechnology is critical, if success is to be realized in this field. Prof. Calestous Juma, the chair of this biotechnology panel, has made it very clear that the proposal?s sole mission is to cluster biotech investments in regions where Return on Investment (ROI) will be high. Such biotechnology investments will also be tailored to meeting immediate and/or long-term needs of the regions where they?ll be located.
The proposal is clear that countries would not be denied opportunities to indulge in their own biotechnology investments.

Knight and Day

Review by Matt Prigge
Opens Fri., June 25
Why is it called Knight and Day? Glad you asked. In this hyper-violent romantic comedy, the token MacGuffin is housed in a toy knight. Also, late in we learn the character we know as Miller (Tom Cruise) is named Knight. Besides, who doesn’t love a teeth-grindingly awful pun? Still, better a bad joke than the shrug-worthy titles it’s gone under (All New Enemies, Trouble Wichita, Untitled Joint Comeback Vehicle for Two Fading Megastars). Not to make too much out of a mere title snafu, but inability to come up with a coherent name is symptomatic of the film’s creative vacuum.
Repartnered with the man with whom she shared a freaky, Monkees-backed sex scene in Vanilla Sky, Cameron Diaz plays a babeish auto mechanic who catches the eye of Cruise’s mysterious rogue. The two share some uninspired chit-chat on an underpopulated plane ride; when she goes to the bathroom, he kills everyone on board, pilots included. Eccentric psychopath who may leap on couches, or superspy nobly defending a newfangled mega-battery invented by a possibly autistic boy genius (Paul Dano)? Either way, he drags a perpetually whinnying Diaz on a massive globetrot that’s part Bond film, part Grosse Pointe Blank, part Mr. and Mrs. Smith, all derivative.
Knight and Day can boast this, at least: It’s not Killers, the month’s other wildly overbudgeted gun-totinq rom-com. What it lacks in inspiration it makes up for in a consistently light tone. No one’s trying very hard, and in the case of goodie-who-may-really-be-a-baddie Peter Sarsgaard, they’re not trying at all. (Cruise, meanwhile, spends the entire film smiling.) The copious twists and action scenes are reliably goofy, even if they feel more like some exec’s idea of wackiness. (Ooh, a car chase during a running of the bulls!)
Every now and then traces of true wit pop up. In one sequence, Cruise drugs Diaz, and she keeps fading in and out, awake long enough to see that they’re in a dangerous situation but not long enough to see the death-defying way Cruise gets them out of it. It’s a clever idea, reminiscent of the hilarious missing reels in Grindhouse

UP to 360 jobs could be axed as William Hill moves its telephone betting business overseas and shuts 50 loss-making branches.
The bookie will switch its phone service, which takes up to 30,000 calls a day from punters, to Gibraltar to dodge crippling taxes.
The firm will close its Leeds call centre with the loss of around 160 jobs and 200 staff at its Sheffield site will transfer to outsourcing firm Vertex when it takes over the operation.
Another 200 jobs will go if Hill’s presses ahead with plans to close 50 of its 170 unprofitable shops.
Ralph Topping, Hill’s chief executive, blamed “unfair competition” for leaving the firm no choice but to move its phone business offshore.
Firms who are based offshore are not liable for the 10% Horseracing Betting Levy which UK bookies must pay on profits

Bridges TV is now
Bridges TV is now offered nationwide via Dish Network. One of the most popular programs on the channel is Each Other, a show about a Muslim woman in the United States who is trying to make it as a reporter in New York. Bridges TV is just one example of Dish Network’s multi-cultural television channels (Dish offers about sixteen different international packages, each in a different language).
Bridges TV will certainly increase the Dish Network audience adding a whole new market that will find interest in Dish Network channels. With already more than seven million Muslim Americans and growing, there is a large audience for this new additional channel. There is also hope that Bridges TV will help bring a greater understanding to this often misunderstood religion. The Bridges TV addition to the Dish Network channel lineup will definitely give the viewer more options.

The massage should not be
The massage should not be painful or cause bruises (if they will appear, it means that you have applied excessive force).
Begin the massage when muscles are absolutely weakened and well prepared for the massage. Hands should not be wet or cold. If you do not use any special means for massage, talc your hands so that they well slide on the skin.
The length of massage is 30-60 minutes, at least once in two weeks. You should never mass the zone of the groin, of the popliteal foss and the top internal part of hips around the pubis. The massage of the stomach must be done very carefully and with especially easy movements. It is better to put the massage of the stomach into the hands of a qualified expert.
When you have heart troubles, varicosity and illnesses of skin it is necessary to hold back from the massage and to resort to other kinds of treatment.

Quarry holiday park wins over planners
Quarry holiday park wins over planners

Ambitious plans to transform a derelict quarry into a holiday retreat in the heart of the Somerset countryside has won unanimous approval from planners.
Despite fears that the narrow, winding roads around Stoke St Michael, Holcombe and Leigh on Mendip will become jammed with hundreds of holidaymakers coming to and from Cookswood Quarry, the application was given a resounding thumbs-up by Mendip District Council’s planning committee.
Richard Massey applied to build 143 timber lodges on 40 hectares of derelict land that was quarried for limestone up until 20 years ago.
The holiday retreat will have a swimming pool and spa, sports facilities, a restaurant, activity lake, land train, bio diversity centre, nature conservation trails, play areas and a car park for 150 cars. The plans have been five years in the making.
Originally the highways authority recommended refusal because the four routes to the quarry are all along country lanes with no footpaths.
Experts working on behalf of the applicant formulated a travel plan to stagger the arrival and departure of more than 200 cars on one day during the peak season. Several villagers remained unconvinced, fearing cars were likely to be parked on the lanes around the holiday park and there would be constant congestion.
There were worries over the impact on the rich and diverse wildlife as the area is home to otters, bats, badgers and greater crested newts.
Planning officer in charge of the application Les Kimberley, who recommended approval, agreed it was “an incredibly rich area, the site being surrounded by areas of special scientific importance” which included a possibly Neolithic cave nearby known as Browne’s Hole and designated as a scheduled ancient monument.
Those in favour wanted to see the quarry made safe. Three people have died in recent years after jumping into the ice-cold lake.
Councillor Les Bennett described the quarry as a shambles filled with dumped cars, prams and old bedsteads.
